The concertino is a reflective and personal piece written for the Redcliffe Ensemble. There are three movements: the first begins as a gentle 'fantasia' and becomes driven by a singel motif that unifies the ensemble, at first with desperation and finally with resignation. The second movement is a scherzo, remembering laughter and playfulness; and the third final movement is a wistful dream, a 'Liebeslied' shrouded in mist. Although by its nature the piano at times appears to have the more prominent part, the title really refers to the ensemble rather than any individual instrument.
