Ave Maris Stella is a popular liturgical hymn dating back to the 9th century....Hail O star of the ocean, God’s own Mother blessed...break the sinners fetters...’ 

Standford wrote his setting of Ave Maris Stella for women’s voices, originally for a French choir from Dijon heard while he was serving on the jury of the Tours Choral Festival 1980 in France. It was later much performed by the Kodály Kórus Debrecen, Hungary.
