'…an elegantly assembled piece, strong in ideas, resourceful in handling them, its harmonic richness tempered by lean counterpoint and cool, clear textures, and containing flashes of wit, both light and dark. The piece actually faces darker emotional issues than are hinted at in the first two movements - particularly the dancing scherzo with its wry rhythmic displacements - and closes in questing, melancholic mood.'
