The first set of Folksongs for strings is a collection of East European tunes dedicated to conductor György Gulyas on his 60th birthday. The set of six folksongs comprise:

Hungary: A soldier entices a young woman to the edge of the woods…she draws one of his swords and kills him

Tcheremiss, Russia: I grew as a one-year seedling, and my hair was pledged before it grew.

A Romanian dance

Hungary: The little black train

Poland: Sabolowa; a dancing song

Hungary: a matchmaking song: I plough the ground and plant pearls, I bend the branches and pick flowers, Hey, hey, my love, come to me.
