'Rarely indeed do we hear the contemporary work whose design is so uncomplicated as that of Patric Standford's Preludio Ostinato. It expounds three muiscal ideas, develops them in two brief sections separated by trumpet passages, all in a musical idiom both understandable and enjoyable. Dare one hint that Schubert could have learned something from Mr. Standford about not overstaying his welcome?'
