Trio for flute, cello & harpsichord

Date:

January 1971

Instrumentation:

  • Instrumental/Chamber Ensemble
  • Keyboard

Forces:

flute, cello, harpsichord

The harpsichord trio was written in January of 1971 for the Telemann Harpsichord Ensemble, and first performed by them at the Wigmore Hall on 16th February, 1971.

It is in four movements, the first of which displays the instruments individually, each having its own characteristic version of the thematic material. The second movement is a lively and traditionally constructed Scherzo with a central trio section, and this is followed by an extended and atmospheric slow movement subtitled ‘Elergy’. The last movement acts as a brief and vigorous coda to the entire work.
